Director of Supply Chain

Client Profile

Client is a leading manufacturer of high-quality metal roofing and gutter systems, serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers across the Western United States. Known for long-lasting performance, architectural distinction, and a commitment to sustainability, the company has built a strong reputation for craftsmanship and innovation. As demand continued to grow, the organization required more sophisticated supply chain leadership to support its multi-site operations and long-term strategic goals.

Role Objectives & Challenges

This was the first time the client had hired a supply chain leader at this level. Historically, a tactical manager had overseen the function, but the company’s growth created the need for a more specialized and strategic leader capable of building a scalable supply chain infrastructure.

The ideal candidate needed strong experience in strategic sourcing, production planning, supplier relationship management, and change management. They also had to come from an organization that had successfully scaled operations and implemented structured supply chain processes.

While the local region offered a strong talent pool, the challenge was identifying leaders who not only came from similarly sized companies but also understood metal manufacturing. The role required someone who could manage long and variable lead times, oversee production in two geographically diverse areas, and operate within a complex order-by-order manufacturing environment. Finding candidates who had successfully navigated this combination of product complexity, multi-site coordination, and growth-stage transformation was the core challenge.

Our Approach to Solve the Search

SCM Talent Group focused the search within the DFW market, where supply chain talent is both deep and diverse. Target companies were selected based on size, structure, workflow similarity, and manufacturing environment.

Because this role required an uncommon balance of strategic and hands-on experience, extensive candidate conversations were critical early in the process. Each potential candidate was evaluated not only for functional expertise but also for their ability to manage growth, lead teams, modernize processes, and understand the nuances of metal manufacturing and multi-location production.

Close collaboration with the company’s president ensured alignment on expectations, cultural fit, decision-making criteria, and the unique leadership profile required for success in this newly elevated role.

The Hire & Results

Five highly qualified candidates were submitted for consideration. An initial hire accepted but departed the organization after one month. Fortunately, two of the remaining finalists were strong enough to move forward immediately, allowing the company to continue the process without losing momentum.

The final hire brought a building materials background along with deep experience in organizational growth, change management, and scaling supply chain operations. This candidate had previously helped guide a company through a significant expansion that ultimately led to its acquisition by Nokia, demonstrating both strategic capability and hands-on operational leadership.

The result was a successful placement of a Director of Supply Chain equipped to modernize systems, strengthen supplier networks, and drive the operational transformation needed to support the client's continued growth.
