Warehouse Manager
Client Profile
Canpump is a third-generation family-owned industrial distributor specializing in high-pressure pumps, misting systems, industrial equipment, replacement parts, and related accessories. Founded in Toronto, the company built a successful ecommerce business serving customers throughout Canada before expanding into the United States with the opening of its Phoenix distribution operation in 2023.
Growth in the U.S. market came quickly. Within a short period, the company had outgrown its original Phoenix warehouse and invested in a significantly larger distribution facility, creating the need for dedicated operational leadership to support the next phase of expansion.
Role Objectives & Challenges
The Warehouse Manager role was created to establish operational leadership within Canpump's growing U.S. distribution business. Until that point, ownership had remained heavily involved in the day-to-day management of warehouse operations. As the business expanded into a larger facility and order volumes continued to increase, leadership needed an experienced warehouse professional who could assume responsibility for daily execution while building the operational structure necessary to support future growth.
The position carried responsibility for shipping and receiving, inventory management, ecommerce fulfillment, warehouse organization, parcel and LTL shipping, and supervision of a growing warehouse team. Beyond managing daily operations, the successful candidate would be expected to introduce standardized processes, establish performance metrics, improve inventory accuracy, and create scalable operating procedures for a rapidly expanding business.
The search presented a unique challenge because of the company's business model. Most warehouse leaders in industrial distribution come from traditional branch environments that focus on contractor sales and counter operations. Canpump, however, operates an ecommerce-driven distribution model where speed, fulfillment accuracy, and warehouse efficiency are critical competitive advantages. Finding candidates with meaningful experience in both industrial products and ecommerce fulfillment significantly narrowed the available talent pool.
Our Approach to Solve the Search
The search concentrated on the Phoenix metropolitan area, leveraging one of the Southwest's largest industrial and distribution labor markets. Rather than limiting the search to direct competitors, SCM Talent Group targeted leaders from adjacent industries including industrial distribution, HVAC, electrical distribution, and heavy equipment businesses where warehouse operations shared similar characteristics.
Candidates were evaluated on more than warehouse management experience alone. The search emphasized professionals with backgrounds in ecommerce fulfillment, warehouse systems, inventory control, process improvement, and team leadership within fast-paced distribution environments. Particular attention was given to individuals who had demonstrated success building operational structure inside entrepreneurial organizations where adaptability and hands-on leadership were essential.
Following an extensive screening process, SCM Talent Group presented a focused slate of five highly qualified candidates whose experience aligned closely with the operational needs of the business.
The Hire & Results
The search was completed in approximately one month while working directly with company ownership throughout the engagement. From the five-candidate slate, two finalists advanced through the interview process before the successful candidate was selected.
The successful hire brought experience leading warehouse operations within an ecommerce-focused distribution center, providing the combination of fulfillment expertise, process discipline, and operational leadership the client was seeking. Although his previous experience came from a different product category, the operational similarities between ecommerce distribution environments allowed him to transition seamlessly into the role.
The placement provided Canpump with its first dedicated warehouse leader in the United States, allowing ownership to transition away from daily warehouse management and focus on broader business expansion. More importantly, the hire established the operational leadership needed to support continued growth, improve warehouse scalability, and position the Phoenix operation for future expansion as the company continues to grow its U.S. footprint.
