Director of Supply Chain
Client Profile
Modus is a rapidly growing product company specializing in innovative crowd-control, safety, and queue-management solutions that also serve as customizable branding and communication platforms. Modus' patented products are utilized by myriad different types of entities, including entertainment venues, airlines, industrial organizations, pro sports teams, and other live event venues. The company operates a global supply chain with manufacturing partners across the globe. They are supported by domestic assembly, kitting, warehousing, and fulfillment operations in Las Vegas. As demand for its products continued to grow, Modus sought to strengthen the operational infrastructure supporting its increasingly complex supply chain.
Role Objectives & Challenges
Modus' rapid expansion made it clear that they needed to make strategic hires to help develop and maintain these growth initiatives. Its complex supply chain needed more specialization, operational visibility, and dedicated leadership. The company wanted to create a Director of Supply Chain position to help stabilize the growth and strengthen end-to-end execution while increasing structure, accountability, and consistency across its operations.
Duties such as inventory planning, purchasing, supplier relationship development, inbound logistics, warehouse operations, quality control and continuous improvement, along with customer fulfillment make for a comprehensive set of responsibilities for this person. Because the products were so highly specialized per major commercial clients, attention to detail and accuracy in fulfillment were paramount. Modus needed to bolster these processes that aligned incoming components and materials, product configuration and assembly, and final delivery to best serve their clients' urgent needs.
Component level supply chains rely on highly tuned individuals who can forecast outages and align international inventory controls with the needs of the client in a timely manner. The successful candidate would be responsible for improving visibility into inventory requirements, supplier performance, and fulfillment activities while developing more consistent processes and operational controls.
The search presented additional challenges related to compensation and geography. The position required broad, director-level supply chain expertise spanning multiple functions. The role also required an onsite presence in Las Vegas, with relocation assistance unavailable, narrowing the potential candidate pool.
Our Approach to Solve the Search
SCM Talent Group worked closely with Modus leadership to tailor search strategies and help counsel on market influenced adjustments to the position requirements. This resulted in a more streamlined job description that was better suited for the role while being more efficient to share with potential candidates.
Given the company's specialized products, SCM Talent Group recognized that restricting the search to direct industry competitors would unnecessarily limit the available talent pool. Instead, the team pursued a cross-industry sourcing strategy focused on candidates with broad, end-to-end supply chain experience.
The search concentrated on the Las Vegas market because the position required an onsite leader and relocation was not part of the hiring strategy. Candidates were sourced from manufacturing, distribution, fulfillment, and operations environments, with particular emphasis on professionals who had managed multiple supply chain functions rather than a single specialty. As talent advisors, we worked closely with the client to help tailor the role to what the marketplace and talent pool could bear in order to better streamline the search process.
SCM Talent Group ultimately presented approximately six candidates with backgrounds ranging from supply chain management and distribution leadership to plant operations and operational transformation. Throughout the process, the recruiting team worked closely with the CEO to calibrate expectations around candidate experience, compensation, and the realities of the local talent market.
The successful candidate emerged early in the process. His background included leadership experience in distribution, fulfillment, supply chain operations, and business transformation within both large and smaller organizations. Beyond his technical qualifications, he distinguished himself through his communication skills, approachable leadership style, professional stability, and strong cultural alignment with Modus.
The Hire & Results
Modus selected an experienced supply chain and operations leader whose background closely matched the company's need for both strategic oversight and hands-on execution. The successful candidate brought experience across end-to-end supply chain management, distribution and fulfillment, operational transformation, and process improvement.
His combination of large-company operational experience and practical leadership capabilities made him particularly well suited to Modus. He understood the importance of establishing scalable systems and processes while remaining directly engaged with the day-to-day challenges of a growing business. However, it seemed to be his soft skills that helped elevate him above the rest of the slate.
The candidate demonstrated the interpersonal qualities Modus valued, including strong communication, an approachable management style, and the ability to work collaboratively with leadership and operational teams. His local presence further strengthened the fit for a position requiring consistent onsite engagement. SCM Talent Group completed the search in approximately three weeks, presenting a targeted slate of six candidates and helping Modus navigate a challenging combination of broad functional requirements, local market constraints, and compensation expectations.
The placement provided Modus with a dedicated supply chain leader equipped to strengthen inventory planning, supplier coordination, warehouse execution, quality control, and customer fulfillment. The hire also represented an important step in building the operational structure, processes, and leadership capabilities needed to support the company's continued growth.
