Plant Manager
Client Profile
The client is a leading manufacturer of dump truck bodies, trailers, hoists, and spreaders, headquartered in Collins, Mississippi. The company serves commercial and municipal customers across the United States, producing a wide range of highly customized, build-to-spec equipment designed for demanding industrial and construction applications.
Operating within a high-mix manufacturing environment, the client manages thousands of SKUs and complex production workflows that span fabrication, welding, paint, assembly, and installation. The business is known for delivering durable, customized products at scale while maintaining strong relationships across a diverse customer base. As demand remained strong across the industry, the Collins facility faced increasing pressure to improve throughput, stabilize its workforce, and reduce backlog.
Role Objectives & Challenges
The Plant Manager role was designed to lead the client's largest manufacturing facility, with full responsibility for operational execution, workforce stability, and continuous improvement. Reporting directly to the President, the role required a leader capable of driving performance across safety, quality, delivery, and productivity in a high-mix, build-to-order environment.
A key challenge was organizational maturity. The company had not previously hired for this level of plant leadership, creating the need to establish clear expectations around scope, compensation, and market positioning. Early in the process, alignment was required to ensure the role could attract candidates with the right blend of technical and leadership capabilities.
Operational challenges were significant. The facility was managing a large backlog, driven by both strong market demand and internal inefficiencies. Workforce instability was another major concern, with turnover rates ranging from 30 to 60 percent. This created inconsistency on the production floor and increased reliance on overtime, impacting both morale and productivity.
The technical profile added further complexity. The ideal candidate needed a strong engineering foundation, with the ability to implement continuous improvement initiatives, improve planning and throughput, and support ERP adoption. At the same time, the role demanded a hands-on leader who could engage directly with frontline supervisors and hourly employees, bringing structure and accountability while improving culture.
Ultimately, the position required a rare combination of engineering rigor, operational leadership, and cultural influence to stabilize the plant and position it for sustained performance improvement.
Our Approach to Solve the Search
The search required a consultative approach, particularly given the company’s limited experience hiring for a role of this scope. Early efforts focused on helping leadership define the position, benchmark compensation, and align expectations with current market conditions.
Sourcing strategy targeted plant leaders from industrial manufacturing environments of similar size and complexity, as well as candidates from larger organizations who were capable of stepping into a more hands-on leadership role. The focus was on individuals who combined technical engineering expertise with practical experience driving continuous improvement and managing frontline operations.
Geographically, the search concentrated on the Gulf Coast region, including Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, with additional outreach to candidates open to relocation. This regional approach ensured access to talent familiar with the labor market dynamics and operational realities of similar manufacturing environments.
Candidates were evaluated on their ability to lead both strategically and tactically, with particular emphasis on workforce stabilization, process improvement, and execution discipline.
The Hire & Results
The search was completed in just 28 days, reflecting strong alignment between the role definition, market strategy, and candidate evaluation process. A slate of five high-quality candidates was presented, with four advancing to interviews and two progressing to onsite evaluation.
The selected candidate brought prior experience as a Plant Manager within an industrial manufacturing environment, along with a strong engineering background and a hands-on leadership style. While not from a direct competitor, the individual had deep experience with similar processes and operational challenges, making them well-suited to the role.
The hire aligned closely with both the technical and cultural requirements of the position, bringing the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives while engaging effectively with the workforce and leadership team. Working directly with senior leadership throughout the process ensured a smooth and efficient hiring experience.
