Client Profile

Welders Supply Company is a family-owned industrial gas and welding supply distributor that has served customers for nearly 90 years. With second- and third-generation ownership involved in the business, the company has built its reputation around responsiveness, flexibility, and customer service while competing against much larger national providers.

The company supports hospitals, manufacturers, and other industrial customers with highly specialized delivery requirements, ranging from FDA-regulated medical gases to the needs of ISO-certified manufacturing operations. Welders Supply has experienced significant growth in recent years, expanding its capabilities, sales organization, and customer base while continuing to differentiate itself through its ability to respond quickly to complex customer needs.

Role Objectives & Challenges

Continued growth created a need to centralize a transportation function that had historically been managed independently across locations. Welders Supply created an expanded Transportation Manager position to provide greater leadership, consistency, and strategic oversight across its transportation operations.

The role would oversee approximately 18 drivers and a fleet of nearly 100 owned and leased assets while serving as the company's primary point of contact for DOT compliance. Responsibilities also included fleet maintenance, driver safety and training, routing, transportation budgets, and coordination with operations, customer service, sales, and plant leadership.

Beyond managing daily transportation operations, the company wanted a leader who could identify the root causes behind recurring issues and begin moving the function from reactive problem-solving toward greater efficiency and standardization. Route optimization was a particular opportunity, along with improving KPIs, controlling fuel and maintenance costs, strengthening vendor relationships, and finding synergies across locations.

The challenge was finding someone who could operate comfortably in both worlds. The successful candidate needed the hands-on transportation experience to lead drivers and keep daily deliveries moving while also possessing the DOT expertise, analytical ability, and leadership skills to help build a more strategic transportation function.

Our Approach to Solve the Search

SCM Talent Group worked directly with the company's senior operational and HR leadership to identify candidates with transportation and fleet management experience in distribution, manufacturing, and other environments with demanding delivery requirements.

Early market feedback also indicated that compensation could limit the available candidate pool. SCM Talent Group provided market compensation data and advised the client on adjusting the range to remain competitive for candidates with the combination of operational leadership and compliance expertise the position required.

Rather than emphasizing volume, the search focused on identifying a small number of candidates whose backgrounds closely matched the company's needs. That approach quickly surfaced a local fleet leader with experience managing a significantly larger driver operation, along with responsibility for scheduling, compliance, training, operational performance, KPI analysis, and employee engagement.

The Hire & Results

The candidate ultimately hired was the first candidate SCM Talent Group presented.

While the search continued and the client interviewed additional candidates to validate the market, none matched the initial candidate's combination of fleet leadership, compliance knowledge, operational experience, and people-management skills. Three candidates were interviewed in total, with the eventual hire becoming the only candidate brought onsite.

The successful hire brought experience managing a fleet of more than 50 drivers, overseeing logistics and compliance, analyzing operational KPIs, developing employees, and partnering across functions to improve service and efficiency. The background provided Welders Supply with both the hands-on transportation leadership it needed immediately and the ability to help build a more centralized, efficient, and strategic transportation operation as the company continues to grow.
