Role Objectives & Challenges
The Director of Strategic Sourcing position is a pivotal role located in New York. The individual in this position would work closely with key collaborators, including the Sr. Director of Strategic Sourcing, Chief Procurement Officer, Contracts Specialist, and three Associate Directors specializing in various sourcing categories (pharmaceuticals, clinical, and non-clinical). This role’s value lies in its ability to directly impact the company’s operations, vendor contracts, and overall revenue. The responsibilities include overseeing the end-to-end strategy for the strategic sourcing department, leading and developing team members, analyzing external spend, and fostering strong relationships with suppliers. However, filling this role posed challenges due to the unique combination of clinical and non-clinical sourcing expertise required, nonprofit budget constraints, and the need for a candidate aligned with the organization’s mission of serving underserved communities.
Our Approach to Solve the Search
To address these challenges, we focused on candidates within the New York area to avoid relocation obstacles, narrowing our search to hospital systems, medical device manufacturers, and non-profit healthcare organizations. Targeting Associate Director and Director-level professionals with strong sourcing backgrounds, we prioritized candidates with proven leadership and communication skills, contract negotiation expertise, clinical sourcing knowledge, and proficiency in ERP systems, particularly SAP. Despite hurdles such as the limited geographic area, competitive compensation, and the complexity of the role, we engaged candidates who aligned with the organization’s values. We ensured clear communication and tailored outreach to engage high-level professionals often inundated with similar opportunities.

At this stage in their career, the candidate was eager to give back and was deeply drawn to the client’s mission of serving underserved communities. Their passion for the role, combined with their expertise and alignment with the client’s values, made them an ideal fit for the position.
